Abhinash Khawas, our Chief Paragliding Pilot and Instructor, is more than a skilled flyer—he is a mentor, a leader, and an inspiration for aspiring pilots across Kalimpong and beyond.
The Journey Begins – 2015
Abhinash took his first leap into the world of paragliding in 2015. What began as a personal thrill quickly transformed into a deeper passion. With each flight from the majestic Delo hills, his love for the sport intensified, and so did his commitment to mastering it.
Over the years, he built his skills from the ground up—learning the nuances of wind, terrain, and technique, while always maintaining a deep respect for safety and precision.
Gaining Expertise – NIMAS (2018)
In 2018, Abhinash expanded his professional scope by joining the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) as an Assistant Instructor. Here, he was exposed to high-altitude adventure training, technical rescue skills, and advanced instructional methodology.
His time at NIMAS equipped him with structured knowledge, discipline, and a broader perspective on adventure sports education, all of which became the backbone of his teaching approach.
A Champion in the Air – National & International Competitions
Abhinash is not just a skilled flyer but also a seasoned competition pilot. He has participated in numerous national and international spot landing competitions, proudly representing his region.
His sharp accuracy and calm under pressure have earned him respect among fellow competitors and the broader paragliding community.
His competitive edge enhances his training sessions, instilling in his students not just how to fly, but how to excel.
A Specialist in Children’s Flights
One of Abhinash’s standout qualities is his ability to connect with children. Over the years, he has become known as a Child Specialist Pilot, making him the go-to instructor for young flyers.
With a calm demeanor, patient instruction, and a focus on comfort and safety, he ensures that every child's first flight is thrilling, emotionally secure, and joyful.
Leadership at Delo Paragliders Association – Since 2020
Since 2020, Abhinash has been proudly serving as the Chief Paragliding Pilot and Instructor at Delo Paragliders Association. In this role, he oversees all flying operations, tandem flights, pilot training programs, and safety management.
He has trained over 50+ paragliding students, many of whom have gone on to become independent pilots and instructors themselves. His leadership has played a pivotal role in elevating Delo as one of India’s premier paragliding destinations.
Legacy in the Making – Pilots Trained by Abhinash
The true mark of a great teacher is the success of their students. And Abhinash’s impact shines through the pilots he has mentored:
Tandem Pilots: Many of his students have gone on to become professional tandem pilots, now flying tourists and thrill-seekers across India.
Competition Pilots: One of his proudest milestones—his trained pilots have participated in FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) international spot landing competitions, even bringing home titles that honor their skill and his mentorship.
Solo Passionate Pilots: Numerous students continue to fly independently, exploring the skies as hobbyists, travelers, and mountain lovers—forever grateful to the man who taught them to trust the wind.
